How big is a goat skull? - Osteometrical Analysis of Goat Skull With Horns
Morphologic and Osteometric Analysis of Goat Skull
The skull region of the Markhoz goat is described osteometrically and morphologically in this study. We measured 17 osteometric parameters on eight goat skulls and summarized the results as mean ± SD. Azerbaijani villages used to have the Markhoz breed of goats. Today, they are absent from the area. Iranian farmers tend to favor markhor goats for their potential to produce mohair, meat, and leather.
How big is a GOAT SKULL?
The skull index in the Markhoz goat was recorded to be 47.77 ± 1.96cm. while it was reported to be 41.95 in the Kagani goat and 53.57 cm in the Mehraban sheep. The average skull size of Markhoz goats is 18.67 cm long and 8.91 cm wide.

Skeletal morphology and morphometry not only describe genetics and ecology but also provide the basis for clinical and surgical practices. Furthermore, an understanding of craniofacial anatomy is essential for the understanding of the spatial relationships of the internal organs of the head. Research has been conducted on the West African Dwarf goat and the Kagani goat. There is no published information on the osteometric and morphological features of the skull of this species. This study analyzed the morphology and osteometry of the skull of a Dwarf Markhoz goat.
Skull Parameters
- Skull Length (SL). The maximum length of the skull from the rostral tip of the incisive bones to the external occipital protuberance.
- Skull Height (SH). From the level of the highest point of the frontal bone to the base of the jugular process.
- Skull Width (SW). Maximum breadth between two zygomatic arches. Skull Index. Skull width × 100/skull length.
Osteometrical Analysis of Goat Skull With Horns
Markhoz goats have a skull index of 47.77 * 1.96, whereas Kagani goats have a skull index of 41.95 and Mehraban sheep have a skull index of 53.57 cm.
Markhoz goats have an average skull length of 18.67 cm and a mean width of 8.91 cm. On the other hand, cranial and facial lengths were 10.23 * 0.76 and 11.13 * 0.38. There was a significant difference between cranial length and facial length between Mehraban sheep and Kagani goat in Markhoz goats.
How do you identify a Skull?
The most effective method of identifying a skull to species is with the use of a dichotomous key. Using this method, plants, fish, and even skulls can be identified. When an organism is identified as a species using a dichotomous key, it can be eliminated as a species.
As this study showed, the average foramen magnum index was 89.32 * 14.1 due to the width of the foramen being larger than the height, which was lower than those reported for camels and goats.
What are the types of Skull With Horns?
An examination of skulls reveals three main classifications: European, Asian, and African. The methods for determining origin are not 100 percent accurate. Ethnicity may be represented on a skull in a variety of ways. They are useful for getting a general idea of race and origin
Both the height and width of the foramen magnum measure 1.7 cm on West African dwarf goats. Kagani goats measured three and twelve centimeters, respectively. In our study, we found that Markhoz goats had smaller foramen magnum than “Kagani goats”.
An article reported that Markhoz goats have lateral edges approximately 4.6 x 0.32 cm and Red Sokoto goats have lateral edges approximately 4.0 cm wide. The width will be between them was 6.44 * 0.23 cm and 2.09 * 0.16 cm. Red Sokoto goats had a width of 4.4 cm and these goats had a width of 4.2 cm.
