24 Secrets for Great Homemade Soap

  1. Add a small amount of sunflower oil instead of Vitamin E.Sunflower oil is naturally high in Vitamin E and has other nutrients that are good for your skin.
  2. Grease your molds before you start.I’ve had some batches that trace long before they should and I don’t have the molds prepared yet. Save time and effort by greasing them ahead of time. (Silicone molds don’t require greasing.)
  3. Measure all your ingredients ahead of time. Not only does it speed up the process, it will also allow you to see if you’re missing something and need to run out and get it.
  4. Mix powdered pigments with oil. There will be less lumps than if you use water. Mix powdered goat’s milk and other ingredients with oil as well for the same reason.
  5. Don’t allow your supplies to run out.If you make a lot of soap (like I do!), pick up extra oils or oatmeal when you do your weekly shopping. It makes it much less of a chance for running out.

      6.  Use a small amount of beeswax to prevent soda ash, or place plastic wrap on top of the new soap before closing it for the first rest period. You must touch the soap with the plastic wrap to eliminate the soda ash.

Or – use the soda ash for a decorative effect, such as foam on the waves of beach soap.

      7.  Mix the lye ahead of time and let it cool. Just be sure to label it!!   I have made several batches of cold lye now.  Make your oils 125° if the lye is 75°. One will balance the other and end up at about 100° which is exactly where you want it.

      8. Buy ingredients in bulk. If you make a lot of soap, it will pay in the long run.

      9. Get a cutting board specially designed for cutting soap. Thus, there will be no chance of getting soap residue on your chicken, or vice versa, getting onions on your soap.

     10. Draw straight lines on your cutting board to help you cut your soap. No guesswork on straight lines.

     11. It’s better to buy wholesale. Obtain a wholesale tax number so that you can buy from sources that only sell to businesses. In a small business, it can make a big difference in expenses.

     12. Warm-up honey before adding to soap. Cold honey will congeal and possibly stay in clumps.

   13. You can preserve the color of dried herbs by mixing Vitamin E oil (or sunflower oil!) with them. Eventually, most all herbs will turn brown, but this helps to slow the process.

   14. Prepare your extra additions ahead of time. As with the molds, sometimes the soap traces quickly and you need to add your additives sooner than expected.

   15. Use a lye calculator. Many websites have lye calculators to help you figure out how much lye you need to make certain oils into soap.

   16. If you are such a neat freak as me, you might end up getting a few beads of lye on you. For convenience, pour vinegar on clean rags or baby wipes.   Vinegar will help to neutralize the lye. You can even make your own baby wipes using this recipe.

   17. You should wait 3-5 days before cleaning your soap-making equipment. Trying to clean them right away will result in a greasy mess and raw lye on your hands. Grease and lye will turn into soap if you wait.   Then soak everything for a few days in hot water.  Most of the time, I don’t need to scrub!

   18. Donate imperfect bars to a homeless shelter or food bank. We have a local organization that helps people after a fire.

Personal care items are always needed by them.

The imperfect bars I make are donated to local organizations so people can have access to good soap.

   19. You can get old or stained flannel cotton baby blankets from thrift stores for cleaning up and covering soap. There is no need for me to worry about stains since I will likely be adding more in the future. They are cheap and very absorbent.

How do you make Goat Milk Soap without lye?

In the case of goat milk, but you prefer soap making without lye, adding milk is simple and easy – no more than one tablespoon of milk per pound of melt and pour base. The same amount of powdered or condensed goat milk can be added to the base – 1 tablespoon per pound.

   20. Use all of your soap-making towels and blankets for a single load of laundry. You need not use soap detergent because the towels and blankets have soap on them. Use hot water and turn your washer off after it agitates a bit.

After they have soaked for a few minutes, finish the cycle.

I don’t use softener either. The natural glycerin in soap acts as a fabric softener.

   21. Mold your soap in silicone. (This one makes a nice bar.) To remove it from the mold, scrape the soap away. No freezing or chipping out with a knife.

   22. Sniff some coffee before a final inspection of your soap. Your nose will be cleared by the scent of coffee.  You can add more scent after you have it exactly where you like.  The lye tends to “eat” some of the scents leaving some bars too faint.

   23. Stirring by hand should be done for at least five minutes in the beginning. It is critical that all of the lye comes into contact with all the oil.  After that, a stick blender can be used.

   24. Have fun! Don’t worry about making the perfect bar. You might miss out on something good.
